Today I released version 0.9 of the Better RSS widget which adds a shortcode to the plugin allowing you to embed feeds into you plugins and posts. The shortcode is [better-rss] and requires a feed="url" option. More Information.

I have a question please:
Know that I have to use the short code brackets.
Could you please give me some examples of usage? Understand that I can set them at the options page, but want to have different options on some post.
Possible to give me a few examples using:
* items: indicates how many articles to include, defaults to 10.
* show_author: whether or not to display the author, can be either 0 or 1.
* show_date: whether or not to display the date, can be either 0 or 1.
* show_time: whether or not to display the time, can be either 0 or 1.
* show_summary: whether or not to display a summary of the article, can be either 0 or 1.
* target: specifies a link target other than the default setting.
* cache_duration: number of seconds to cache RSS feed results.

Hi I tried the shortcode on a post but I get this error.
Warning: file_get_contents() [function.file-get-contents]: Unable to access //wordpress.org/development/feed%E2%80%9D in /var/www/MYURLHERE/public_html/wp-includes/class-feed.php on line 97

RSS-error: file_get_contents could not read the file
Could it be my W3 Total Cache or another plugin that is interfering?
Make sure to include the http: in front of the URL - that is required. It looks as if you may have left that out of the shortcode.

Hi!
I'm have a glitch with shortcode implementation.
I'm using the widget in a widgetized home page, and it works beautifully. I'm pulling Google News RSS feeds (custom searches).
I want to do some drill-down type searches, more specific, and give each one its own page, showing titles and excerpts. The shortcode would be ideal for this.
I tried the shortcode using one of the existing RSS urls (one that is presently in use in the widget and working properly). It tells me there is no RSS feed at that address.
I tried from Yahoo News as well. Same result.
Finally, I tried using my site's regular rss feed. That worked, perfectly.
Is the shortcode simply not capable of processing the URLs from Google News, etc.?

Most likely over looking something simple, but cannot get the following feed to work using the short code:
http://news.google.com/news?ned=us&topic=e&output=rss
Using (removed the brackets):
better-rss feed="http://news.google.com/news?ned=us&topic=e&output=rss" items=5 show_date=1 show_author=1 show_summary=1
All I get on the post is "RSS Error: A feed could not be found at http://news.google.com/news?ned=us&topic=e&output=rss"
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

For the shortcode, you may need to remove the quotes around the RSS feed. I have seen it work then. Long URLs, such as the one JennyD posted, may not work with the shortcode due to truncating of arguments in the Wordpress core, something I can not get around.
Thanks for the reply. I had already tried removing the quotes from around the RSS feed. Must be something that WP is removing.
I tried this on a old 2.8 version and it works, but will not on 3.0. So that is telling me the good ole WP folks have yet again made life hard for us, lol

Is it possible to call this widget from the sidebar.php file? If I add from the widget area I lose everything in the sidebar. The widgets I am using are called using php.
example: <?php wp_recentcomments('avatar=false'); ?>
I have tried guessing at how to do this in the manner above, as well as using the shortcode out of the loop method. The result is Fatal error: Call to undefined function rss() in sidebar-second.php
I tested the shortcode in a post. That works well.
Worked out how to add to a sidebar using the shortcode with a little help from http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/do_shortcode and http://wp-cms.com/template-development/inserting-wordpress-shortcode-outside-the-loop-in-a-template/
<?php echo do_shortcode('[better-rss feed="http://yourfeedaddress.com" items=3]'); ?>
No follow and open in new window set in admin panel carry over to the shortcode.
This is working at the moment on a test blog of mine using Wordpress 3.0 and a feedburner address. :-)
